BUFFALO, N.Y. — On any given night, you’ll hear plenty of Bills chatter at Pearl Street Grill and Brewery. Even as the Sabres played Wednesday, it was the football team that dominated conversation within the People Inc. Guys Group.
“I think they’re going to be fine. I think they’re going to be a good team,” said Kevin Johnston, Williamsville. “I’m a huge fan of the Buffalo Bills and I think their offseason has been great.”
It doesn’t appear the team is done yet – but will it matter?
“You can go in and get like Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, Andre Reed, Darryl Talley and put them in front of E.J. Manuel and Matt Cassel and see if that helps them. If that’s what you’ve got to do, give them a shot,” said Justin Clark, Buffalo resident.
While QB remains a question, Shawn O’Rourke, the Director of Canisius College’s Sports Administration Program, believes the Bills have a plan that can work.
“It’s been great. It’s exciting and I think they’re really going to put a great product on the field.”
O’Rourke said that from the high-profile trade for running back LeSean McCoy to actively seeking other players to help the rushing game, the Bills are trying to compete.
“Ralph Wilson would have never spent the money that the Pegulas did, first and foremost, in getting a head coach the caliber of Rex Ryan, so that to me made a statement right there and now they’re making a statement by signing these free agents and it’s all about winning. It’s all about winning now,” O’Rourke said.
That’s enough, O’Rourke believes, to keep fans coming back.
“You can see it in them buying tickets and them buying product and merchandise. Again, it’s a great buzz and it’s a buzz that you have around here 12 months of the year.”
Of course you don’t need to tell these fans how long it’s been since the team made the playoffs.
“We’ll see what happens. I’m really excited. I’m really excited kind of ending a 15-year drought and hopefully we get over the top,” Clark said.
